Alausí is known for its rich culture and heritage; however, it faces historical disparities in access to basic services. In the canton, 71% of water systems have deficiencies in collection or distribution, while only 22% of the population has access to sewer service. Following the devastating landslide in 2023, the need to ensure safe and dignified healthcare facilities became an urgent priority for the region. In response to this situation, FIEA Ecuador—in a strategic partnership with the Alausí Mayor’s Office, international cooperation agencies, and the community itself—spurred the construction of the new Type A Health Center. This project, initially conceived in 2022 as a local capacity-building initiative, evolved into a humanitarian emergency response to protect the affected population. The project goes beyond the physical structure to become a model of comprehensive management focused on restoring dignity and safety in healthcare. Its development incorporated technical assistance from multidisciplinary and international specialists, resulting in a modern infrastructure that respects and embraces Alausí’s cultural identity. This initiative demonstrates that the integration of technical rigor and social commitment can transform complex realities into sustainable, long-term solutions.
